WASHINGTON TREMLETT

Fine Shirt Makers since 1870
8 Savile Row
London

Washington Tremlett founded his eponymous shirtmaking company in Paris in 1870. Shortly afterwards a branch was established in Conduit Street which rapidly became the Group's headquarters. For 60 years, until the recession of the 1970's took its toll, the company was the foremost shirtmaker in Europe and the New World. Americans would arrive at Southampton for the summer season in England and order 3 or 4 gross of shirts at a time. Sam Goldwyn was a famous customer, as was Katherine Hepburn, the Onassis and Lirvanos families, Rex Harrison and Wilfred Hyde-White. The latter two became customers when Tremletts made the shirts worn for the theatre production and film of My Fair Lady. Tremletts had a strong reputation in thespian circles and made many shirts for the stage.

Washington Tremlett once made for over half the crowned heads of Europe, including the King of Spain. Ironically though the Company is probably most famous for inventing the tie. In 1892 Mr Tremlett was asked by an American customer, Mr Wright, to design some original neckwear for his visit to the Paris Opera. Until then a cravat or limp bow had been de rigeur. Mr Tremlett produced a seven fold cravat, hanging from the neck, stitched at the edge, narrow at the top and broad at the base. The tie was born.

Washington Tremlett now solely produce shirts from their workshops in Jermyn Street and Savile Row. Listed below are several reasons why the real bespoke shirt is still the best investment:
